Top 10 Reasons why a Male may prefer to wear Earrings

If asked why Men wear earrings probably the most common answers would be trend and tradition. Despite of the fact that in many places of work or at job interviews wearing earrings may work against men, it does not stop them from wearing them. Many Celebrities wear ear rings and fans like to follow them. Tyson Beckford who bought expensive diamond studs for his girlfriend wore it himself instead of returning to the jeweler when he found that she had been unfaithful. Some popular types of earrings worn by men are studs and hoops made with metals like gold, platinum, copper, steel and silver. Indian Men have worn earrings through the ages. There are several references in the Bible also concerning earrings. Many Kings in India are known to wear them. It may also be noted that Hindu gods are depicted with their danglers. It's part of Indian culture.

It is believed that men have worn earrings for as long as civilization has existed. Jade earrings of men dating back to 3000 BC have been found in Southeast Asia. In ancient times, men wore earrings in places like Assyria and Babylonia to denote their rank in society. Aztec warriors wore them as a mark of honor. It may be noted that even the primitive man pierced himself to wear earrings which were not only mere adornments that spoke of power but priced possessions as well. It is also believed that even slaves have worn earrings or bracelet as a symbol of slavery.

There are several reasons why men wear ear rings. Given are top 10 such reasons.

  1. Many men wear rings as a fashion trend. Many young men wear ear studs or hoops as a Style statement because they want to or find it attractive or stylish or as a mean to enhance their looks.
  2. Many other wear it as a custom or tradition followed in their religion. The practice of piercing ears is one of the Hindu practices performed in the third or fifth year for some Hindu children. This ceremony is celebrated by inviting people and feasting.
  3. Some wear diamond studs or golden earrings are a way to display their wealth or as a safe investment they can bank on during hard times.
  4. There are many actors who pierce their ears so that they could fit into the character they are playing.
  5. Some guys pierce their ears because they think that girls find guys wearing earrings sexy.
  6. Many times the man would have got the ear stud as a gift from a girl friend, wife or a friend and would have pierced the ears so that he could wear it.
  7. Wearing earrings in one ear (on the right lobe) is considered as a mark of homosexuality. But this is just a misconception. There are also criminals using this misconception to misguide people. Some parents also think that wearing an earring means that person is becoming a hippie.
  8. Many wear earrings because of the Therapeutic Significance. It is believed that the point of vision in acupuncture is situated in the center of the lobe. Hence the practice of wearing earrings is thought to have some therapeutic value.
  9. It is believed that long ear lobes like Buddha are a sign of spiritual development and superior status. Young yogis even now follow the practice of stretching the piercing to stimulate the psychic nerves connected to the ears.
  10. Finally, Many men also wear earrings to rebel or stand out in the crowd. People like to do things which they are instructed not to do. Many also tend to think that wearing it would separate themselves from the masses - to be an individualist.(Thanks John for the point)

Guys, do you wear earrings? What is the reason behind you wearing it? Ladies, what do you think of men wearing earrings?

Cristiano Ronaldo looks great with or without earrings

I think you left out one of the more important reasons - to rebel. Many men wear earrings to show that they are non-conformist. In our society it is becoming more and more difficult to separate yourself from the masses - to be an individualist. I think earrings and tattoos fall into the same category. People want to be different - to stand out from the crowd.

But the more people that adopt a fad, the less the more the actually conform.

In the end, I think the best way to stand out is to simply be your own unique self. But a lot of people have trouble just being themselves. They are afraid to be totally transparent, therefore they resort to other means to try to stand out.

It used to be a tradition for British sailors to wear a single gold earring....or so I have always believed. This was to pay for a Christian burial if they died in a foreign land.

Interesting hub. I don't wear an earring, never have, never will.

Arka 2 years ago

As a 27 yo sporting an earring I have to say getting your ear/s pierced is almost as much of a fashion statement as wearing a white shirt and jeans on a fine morning. You do it to feed the composite body-image that you have. Relegating piercing to the further end of the spectrum as vanity is definitely not done as has been done in some of the comments. It is like bringing people to task for having a predilection for a particular make of clothes/look

Peace.

Arka : you are quite right.

maven101 : I remember hiring a guy with long hair and spoting an earrings (he was a model and extremely goodlooking) to my Sales Team and my Boss was not happy with my choice and wanted him to cut his hair. I had to convince my boss that he would perform better than all other members in the team and he did too without cutting off his hair.

William : I like mean wearing simple diamond studs.

michelle.dragon99 : Thanks for expressing your Opinion.

The one I remember (from some childhood book I read) that is not mentioned here is that ancient sailors wore an earing as a superstition that they would not drown if they had it on.

It is interesting how some guys are more than happy wearing earrings while others will never put a hole in their ear. Of course some guys look good in them while others don't.

The President 22 months ago

Men with earrings are garbage. Its disgusting. Stupid. Ridiculous. Especially nowadays with all these wannabe-pimps that, as a matter of fact, are usually dirt poor, smell like shit, and look dirty and scruffy, who wear fake diamond studs to make people think they have money. What a waste. Had I my way I would cut off the ear of every man wearing an earring. Either that or castrate him, so essentially it would not be a man wearing an earring(s) anymore, ha. ha. ha.

danxn 22 months ago

I would have to agree with john. Because in this time and age people try to fit into the crowd; go with out notice. Guys who wear earrings are just another way to stand out as a person. And to the people who think men wearing earrings are "not right" where did you get this judgment from? Is it because growing up you don't see much or any men wearing earrings, and only woman wearing them? So you come to the conclusion of men with earrings isn't right?

Chris 21 months ago

Some men wear it because it completes their looks. It's not for everyone...but the notion that it's a display of someone's character is simply ridiculous. More often than that it's an earring, nothing more. I don't understand why some people can be so judgmental

"The President" who commented above me especially

Ed 21 months ago

'The President' is obviosuly a very close-minded individual. Who is to say what looks disgusting? That is just one person's opinion, and frankly no men wearing earrings would really give a damn. I, as a man who has piercings, definitely wouldn't. Oh, and I don't want to be a pimp either, Mr. President. Take your judgemental ideas elsewhere please.

gabe 20 months ago

this is very funny. many people believe guys should not have ear piercings. but if they insist people think guys should have 1. i am proud to say i am a guy and i have both my ears pierced and i enjoy them very much and i dont really care wherther it pleases other people or not. people need to be themselves and if earrings makes them feel that much better about themselves DO IT!!! if you decide you dont like it anymore you simply take it out and let it close no regrets!

anyway i have both ears pierced and all the ladys i know think its a sign of masculince if used right.

Mike 19 months ago

It really says, "look at me!" An are of self-exaltation for men.

Josh 19 months ago

I wear a diamond stud in both my ears. I like wearing earings, they suit me and I think its cool, yes because its fashionable today, I probably would not wear them if it wasn't fashionable. I think the arguement about them being a show of extravagance or pride and showing off doesn't make sense because you could say the same for any fashionable item of clothing thats signifies you as being cool or fashionable, as well as the fact clothing stands out way more than the tiny studs in my ears.

In Ancient China, any young boy who suffered from weak health would need to wear an earring to bless him to grow up and not to die young. Wearing an earring back then was an indication of his parents wishing for him to live healthily.

IN 1972 I pierced my ears, I was 15 years old. I was ridiculed, beat up and avoided like the plague. I grew up in a blue collar town where such things just weren't done. I had to remove them for survival. I'm now 55 and getting them done again this weekend.

Lon 16 months ago

I think it is a sign of insecurity. If you are secure in who you are you don't usually do anything to draw attention to yourself. If you need attention it is a sign of weakness. Jesus, who was totally secure, could not be picked out in a crowd according to the word. When I see them I assume the person has other problems too and sure enough if you get to know them those problems come out pretty fast. I guess it could be the excessive soy consumption which is being researched now.

Jack 16 months ago

For a man to wear an earring or earnings is definitely a sign to other men of a man who wishes to express himself as an individual or just wants some attention. However that indication of individualism is a negative sign, seemingly an expression of some kind of perversion. The person seems different, indeed, either he as a homosexual, pot smoker, criminal pimp, gypsy, child molester, pick pocket -- hide your wallet, they are not to be trusted. This is what other men think. They appear dirty and slimy to most men and one who you could catch a disease from, or one who could violate your family and friends. The normal male wants nothing to do with this type of guy. Ask the men on the street. I bet the first word that comes to mind would be, "freak".

the Facts 15 months ago

for men to wear earring it shows how he is empty from inside, and not a strong confident person, also he feels unloved or been ignored, and try to show off.

Ian 14 months ago

Everyone who has posted negatively towards men who choose to wear ear rings need to do some serious soul searching. With a little humility, maturity and intelligence hopefully you will cultivate an opinion of understanding. Stray away from confirmation bias and know that if you never take the time to challenge your own preconceptions you may live the rest of your life in ignorance.

Please try to make your impact on this world a positive one.

George 12 months ago

I've worn a hoop earring in each ear soon after I got married 15 years ago. I think they look good and my wife thinks they look sexy. There is no harm in wearing them and anyone who is derogatory about men who do should really look into their own soul. It is such narrow mindedness that is the reason people still can't get along with one another.

To Lon, Jack and TheFacts,

How can you be ever so wrong. I'm a perfectly happy person of normal intelligence - I'm an architect - am very much appreciated by the people who surround me, and I am getting my ear pierced again (since my story is not unlike Gary's, except for the fact that I was 15 in 1978 and my parents gave me a hard time when they saw my sporting an earring, which definitely had to go immediately of course).

With two new studs in my left ear I will remain the same person, but I like showing that I am in perfect harmony with the feminine aspects of my personality as well as my masculinity, my main characteristic.

So think again gentlemen, before you put down such nonsense.

JET GREEN 11 months ago

I did pierce both ears, I feel normal, but its nice to see reaction when its +ive. Lol! Well some ppl will obviously get jealous. Fine I dont look at ma face, well with out makeup most of actress look bad, Well some ppl may also say no they look good and some will say bad. Well ma opinion is simple, do you live for other ppl, as long as it doesn't hurt others do it.

Sandeep 10 months ago

I wore it (against my wishes) because astrology suggested me to do so. The initial plan was to pierce in my nose, but since it would look way non-social, the alternative was to get pierced in the ear.

Baron 9 months ago

I'm a 53 year old health care professional. Had one ear pierced in 1976. Took it out many times due to feeling the negative reactions similar to some of the negative posters. After suffering an almost "Sudden Death" due to heart attack, I decided life was too short to worry about negative people. I recently re-pierced both ears. I did not do it because I am insecure and need attention, I did it for the opposite reason. I am secure in myself and it is my choice...my life. Some complaints sound like the same turn-of-the-century arguments against women wearing pants.

Surya 9 months ago

Lon...Really? How do you know that Jesus was totally secure? So you are comparing people living in this day & age with Jesus Christ. Well, we are made in his likeness, but as human beings we are unfortunately plagued with insecurity, which makes us normal. Pierced ears started somewhere centuries ago, probably with ancient kings or warriors. Even as described by a few posters that sailors believed wearing an earring would prevent them from drowning. As the years pass I believe that tradition, as most, are tampered with, changed and adjusted and now today it's usually a fashion statement, a tradition/religion of some sort.

What kind of person says, 'when i see a person pierced I think they have other problems?'....i'm guessing a person with a great deal of issues themelves.

A Kenyan Chief justice candidate, Willy Mutunga has created a storm because of a small ring in one of his ears. He said during the interview that it is religious, and that he would rather miss the job rather than be separated from his object of spirituality. Well, he came out the winner in a hotly contested and an intensely examined/grilled interview. What is this religion?

It is not clear just what spirituality he is talking about. Kenyans are worried that his stud is a velied expression of homosexuality. The churches have rejected his candidature.

torty 8 months ago

Hi Anamika S,

I think that you left out one reason why us guys get our ears pierced and that reason is just because we wanted to. I have both my ears pierced and the only reason why I did it was just because I wanted to. The fact that I wanted to have both my ears pierced did not have any sort of underlying, profound meaning behind it nor was it a statement of my sexual preference or claiming of any sort of group. I tend to think of myself as a pretty simple sort of creature. I am straight forward, honest, and usually if it makes me happy and I can afford it, I will usually do it. I think your list of reasons why guys decide to get their ear(s) pierced is pretty good and does cover a lot of the reasons why we do it.

Harry 8 months ago

Hello. I'm from Greece and i'm thinking of piercing my left ear only. I am not so sure yet because i don't know if i can "support" it with my general style which is simple and casual. I believe that it depends on the person only if he would be nice with an earing. Others look well...others do not...

Frank 8 months ago

I just think it's sexy, so I'm really thinking to pierce my ears.

raph 8 months ago

Can have studs in both lobes, with one or two BCRs above either lobe. Very comfortable - and totally confident wearing them in any combination. So much so, now feel most uncomfortable without them. Once pierced, there's no going back - a beautiful addiction and an essential statement. Couldn't live without them - now. If in any doubt, get pierced, and there'll be no regrets.

Wow.. People think that wearing studs is wrong still? You people must live in some kind of pathetic backwards society. So many people have studs these days that no one even pays attention to that fact. And a lot of the time, these people are confident and attractive enough to pull it off. Guaranteed all these people hating on and demonizing studs are ugly and pathetic.

Constructive criticism for this article:

1. Make sure that all of your sentences make sense when you read them (e.g. "guying wearing earrings sexy")

2. Make sure that you don't simply reword the same point, adding a little more information and list it as another (e.g. 2 and 9).

3. Make sure that you have your facts checked (e.g. The misconception from no. 7 is that wearing one earring on the RIGHT lobe in western society is a mark of homosexuality, not simply wearing one earring.

I am a 55yo married guy who has a pierced ear. Wear a small stud and sometimes a small silver hoop or a bit larger gold hoop...when I wear them.

In fact I have not actually put any of them in for about nine months or so. It is not that I no longer care for them, it just is not part of my morning routine lately.

BTW: My wife bought all my earrings for me and loves the look, so maybe I better pull them out of the drawer and plug one of them into the ear.

My wife is the one who pierced my ear for me using an ice cube and a sterile needle. Did not hurt a bit. Good thing she wasn't mad at me at the time or she might have used a rusty nail.

I think everyone that has posted negative comments towards guys with pierced ears should take a cold hard look at themselves in the mirrior! And i'm sure you will find nothing but hate in yourself, the only reason you are so negative towards guys with pierced ears is because they themselves feel confident enough to be okay with themselves and express themselves that they are okay with who they are, and they can do this any way they feel, being a bold fashion statement, or even getting pierced ears. You people are just disgusted because you aren't okay with who you are, you are upset by your bottled up feelings, and only with to reflect it upon people who are okay with themselves enough to do something that isn't like the "old ways" where guys were looked at bad for having a pierced ear! You shouldn't me happy with yourself for bringing people down by telling them they shouldn't pierce there ears! Get over yourself it's a new generation! And we are in fact taking control, weather the old farts like it or not! I'm also proud to say i'm an 18 year old male who just got his ears pierced! And enjoy it! I feel comftorble, confident, and proud to be the person i am. And if you aren't don't comment on this topic we don't want your negative talk on here!

I'm an 18 year old male and I got my left ear pierced about a year ago for the ren fest. I loved it. I got compliments on it. But I myself wanted to stand out more. And right around the time I started dating my current girlfriend I began to gauge my ear. I am now at a half inch. I still get compliments. She thinks its sexy. There is nothing wrong with peircings or gauges. They have both been around for thousands of years.honestly now For me it acts as more of a symbol the anything. I as a person changed a lot since I've gotten it. I've made changes for the better. And it reminds me of these changes but also reminds me of my girlfriend and the love I have for her. It acst as a symbol of my happiness, perserverance, strength and love. Before you go and judge anyone about something like this look at it this way. Say your favorite thing to wear was a purple shirt and a black baseball cap. Then all the sudden there are 10.000 crimes with people who wear a purple shirt and a black baseball cap. Does that make you a bad person?. NO. Its all about the stereotypes. so think twice before you judge. No man /woman is better then the next. And no Human is perfect.

But if its in style now so i might as well go buy myself some cheap diamond studs $50 it doesn't look bad.

First off who are you lames sitting behind computer screens to judge what a person wants to wear? Most of these people on here against earrings are not accepted in society. Nobody values what you say so shut up. Anybody can wear whatever the hell they want to, as long as its important to you.

My own person 3 months ago

I got both of my ears pierced 3 weeks ago just because I wanted to and I can't wait to put in my diamond studs that I bought in a couple weeks. I don't know what they'll look like on me yet but both my girlfriend and I like how my current ones look on me and she thinks it's sexy. I've gotten negative reactions to them like some of the people above said but I'm my own person and I'll do what I want? Who's to say wearing one or two earrings means you are gay? No part of me is homosexual and the people criticizing me know this too do why judge me? Men have worn earrings centuries before you critics who think you know all about life. Being yourself means doing what you like because you like it, not or other people. I don't wear them to try and get people to stare at me or give me comments on them. I like how I look with them on when I look at myself in the mirror and I feel confident enough to brush of the negative comments I may get. Some of you are so narrow minded you don't even look at yourself or understand how something like this could be considered biased. Do what u want to yourself and don't judge others for being themselves.

Just read through the comments here -- what strange ideas people have.

When men first started wearing earrings in each ear, I tried it out, liked it and have worn them ever since. The same with my hairstyle and three day beard -- I tried it out, liked it and kept it.

Sometimes I wear a nose stud, too. I like anything that enhances my looks, and I've got the freedom to wear whatever I like. I guess that's lacking in some of the people who have commented here.

Interesting Hub!

I am interesting about your article. Last month I send comment about me. Still you didn’t post that. Again I post to you about my self experience wearing earrings. I am a now married male person. From my small age I like to wear earrings .so school time I pierced the ears my self. From that day when I sleeping night time I am wearing earrings up to now. This will like an evil thing. Its forcing to my self you should wear earrings all the time. My waif understands about that she helps to me that. Now I have two kids also but I couldn’t stop that. Now it’s like a mania. Its now effect to my self development also. So what is your idea about that. So if you don’t like to openly send me reply you can send to my e mail kuma.arunda@gmail.com. Thanks.

Wow, how can so much conversation go on for years about earrings on men? It is interesting that the opinions seem to change over the years. At the top, comments are more relaxed and near the end comments are almost hostile. I am planning to get my ears pierced next weekend so I can wear earrings while cross dressing. Some of those hate mongers will probably comment on crossdressers next but I want to say it first. Most (85%) crossdressers are not into men!

I love my lady and I like to look sexy in my dresses. That's my reason and I didn't see it listed here yet, so I added it.

Have a great day :)

I cant explain how much i like wearing it it just feels awesome. When girls tell me they like it and say its cute i love it. One of the reasons i got it is cos i think it makes me look hard. When i was at school the hardest kids all had a stud in their left ear and i used to get really jelous of them.

Women take note... all the ignorant biased judgmental slander on this post towards men wearing earrings, deep in their hearts many feel the same about women. I've known and met men like this! But they will hide their opinions in front of women in order to obtain certain favors ! God made both sexes with 2 feet, 2 arms 2 ears. If one sex wears 2 shoes, should the other only wear one on the left foot ? This same stupidity goes for earrings, shoes, shorts, dresses etc. If someone enjoys wearing a shoe on each foot and a shoe on each hand, it is nothing to anyone else. They are not being forced to do it. People enforcing clothing rules on others when they would hate someone enforcing their ideas on them is sheer sexual bigotry. Big beer gutted men that are too fat to hold their pants up is threatening a skinny guy for his pants being to short. Does this strike you of not being exactly intelligent ? lol

I came across this by accident, and just wanted to share my experience... I have two ear piercings, both on my left ear, one is a helix and the other anti-tragus... I'm 20 now, and I had these for about 4 years. In all those years I heard only one negative comment, saying that it makes me look "not serious enough" and it was from a guy. Once a girl in a bar asked me if she could lick my ear piercing... Plus, I live in a very judgmental country. I don't even know how this tread survives, because the topic itself is ridiculousness. Why did I get them pierced? Because I FELT LIKE IT.

I have both of my ears pierced because I'm gay and it makes me more approachable for other gay men.

Yaaaaaawwwnnnnnnn....

Same ol' crap on the subject. When will humankind grow up? "The President" and those troglodytes that think like him will always be holding natural evolution back...

"Starlight" said it better than I could...

One of the greatest evils of this world are those who would deny the free will of others. Trying to control other people's actions needlessly is both cruel and unethical. Keep your so-called "morality" to yourself.

As for me, I'm a male who wears earrings in both ears - I like symmetry. I have over 100 pairs of earrings - far more than my wife of 28 years! A few studs, most of them are dangles - some are pretty outrageous! Why not? Being over 50 years old, I'll be damned if I'll let others make my decisions for me...

The concept of Earrings on men is no different than ball caps or pants on ladies. Females have trended to "strictly male apparel" (by 19th and early 20th century standards) so men, by all rights, should be free to do the opposite as well. In my case, I am totally straight, I have one in the right lobe (obtained AFTER the "gay" connection to them), and a significant number in the left, (some of them) for over 25 years now. They are all hoops and of a relative large size that is quite noticeable. I got them one or two at a time over a period of years, upon the encouragement of various females I've known. I find them amusing, in that they encourage some people to ask questions and remark how great they look (never a negative comment). I find them as a statement of wealth as they ARE all solid 12-14ga gold. And, I also find them sexually stimulating when partners fondle them. I would not give them up without a fight. Fortunately, I am financially independent and self employed, so there is no one to tell me to remove them. To be REAL man is to stand up and do WHATEVER he feels is right for himself, not cower to the will and desires of ANYONE else.

I'm a guy with my left ear pierced twice and my right ear pierced three times. I also have my navel pierced. Some of us do this to feel closer to the gender that they were supposed to be, not the one they were stuck with at birth.

I am a 29 year old male who wears two earrings in each ear. I am a Petroleum Engineer, quite successful, educated, social, normal and definitely not insecure. I'm 6'3" 220lbs and stand out regardless of whether or not I wear earrings. A lot of these comments seem to be from close minded, judgmental and self righteous people. I have worn my earrings to interviews, meetings, etc. etc. I basically always wear them, and I have never had any negative feedback, and I think out of every position I've applied for I've only been turned down once. To the person high above who said they don't hire people with ponytails or earrings, you are a representation of everything that is wrong in the world. You are a person that judges people based on what is on the outside verses what is on the inside, shame on you. I look forward to the day when the close minded 'holier than thou' group of people in our workforce move into retirement, so that the young, bright and introspective leaders can run this world. Every time we take a few steps forward in acceptance, there is someone from past generations that tries to pull us back. To those of you so quick to judge a man with earrings based on biblical principles, does the Bible not tell you not to judge lest you be judged? It's funny how the 'righteous' seem to skip over certain scriptures. To those of you who say certain men wear earrings for attention...well I'm sure if I put on a Burberry polo shirt, or a nice pair of cufflinks, or alligator shoes, or a $500 silk neck tie, I will draw a lot more attention that a man with some studs in his ears. People are people, there are a lot of men in prison that committed heinous crimes sporting conventional hair cuts and no earrings, just as their are professionals and business men who are very successful with long hair and earrings. Learn to judge people based on the content of their character and not their outward appearance.

I'm a 50 year-old straight man who has had both ears pierced for many years. I enjoy wearing earrings not to stand out, or to rebel, but simply because I like the way they look on me. Period.

Society has always tried to be careful about what apparrels define males and females. The more rules it lays down, the more people, young ones especially, will rebel. People fight to be themselves, to be free to make their own choices.

If we compare the clothing and apparrels of different cultures, we will probably find in each something that the sexes in others would not wear because they look like they belong to the opposite sex. Consider the kilts (skirts) worn by some men of Holland. Consider the loin cloths worn by some men in very warm jungle climates. Consider the habits worn by Geisha girls. Consider the wigs worn by the men at the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Consider the topless women of some African cultures. All of a sudden, the earings seem very small.

A very interesting read. I tried wearing one earring (stud) in my left ear about 10 years ago. Due to infection I had to remove it. Since that time I have often thought about trying again. Why? I don't really know. It's just that I think it would look 'stylish'. I am 50 years of age. I am not insecure or trying to show off. My young adult children think it would look stupied and are actively trying to discourage me. In essence, I think that is my real dilemma: I would like to try wearing an earring again, but I am concerned what others would truly think of me. In many ways, the earring is just like another piece of jewellery. I wear a nice watch, not just to tell the time, but also to 'look good' on my wrist. I wear a three-piece gold ring which my wife bought for me as a 20th wedding anniversary present. Many people have commented how much they like it. I don't need to wear the ring, I do so because I like to wear it. So in many ways, the earring would be in the same category. However, I am conscious of the opinion of other people in regard to the earring. Thanks to those who have contributed to this discussion.
