Sunstone Gemstone or Aventurine Feldspar

Sunstone is a variety of Plagioclase feldspar which emits flashes of shimmering golden-orange color similar to that of the golden rays of the Sun. It is a protective gemstone and is normally seen in colors like yellow, orange and reddish brown. It is normally formed in molten lava and is discharged onto the surface with the help of a volcano. This stone is also known also as ‘Aventurine Feldspar’ and has a hardness rating of 6.5 on the Mohs scale with a triclinic crystal structure. They are normally non transparent, but it also comes in transparent form. These stones are rare and carry a higher price tag. Sunstones from Norway are said to be the best quality available in the market. Sunstone from Oregon in USA which has copper inclusions in the stone is also extremely popular and is the official gemstone of Oregon.. Sunstones which are more clarified and have Hematite inclusions instead of Copper are known as Heliote (derived from the Greek words ‘helios’ and ‘lithos,’ which mean ‘sun’ and ‘stone’) or Confetti Stone. Heliolite is known as Feldpsar Oligoclase, while normal Sunstone is known as Feldspar Orthoclase. Goldstone which is a synthetic material is a popular imitation for Sunstone (Monkstone or Aventurine Glass).

This stone is associated with the Zodiac Signs of Leo, Libra, Aries and Gemini. This stone is representation of Sun and is used along with Moonstone in Solstice rituals. These two stones complement each other and can be carried together to get the benefits of the Sun (Healing, Vitality, Protection, Success, Leadership Qualities) and Moon (Peace, Love, Harmony, Spirituality) Sunstone is widely used in gemstone jewelry and carving of sculptures. Sunstones are found in many places including Finland, Canada, India, Madagascar, Siberia, USA, South Norway and Russia.

Healing and Metaphysical Properties of Sunstones

Sunstone is linked to good luck, romance and abundance. It is said to stimulate the personal attraction and charm of the wearer by increasing vitality, courage, optimism, positive attitude and confidence. Wearing a sunstone increases feelings of self-worth, self esteem, self confidence, independence, enthusiasm and cheerfulness. This is an excellent stone for those who find it difficult to say ‘no’ to others and thereby end up being a scapegoat and taken advantage of. Sunstone is a powerful stone for dispelling fears, stress and phobias of all kinds. This stone is said to increase self healing abilities of the wearer.

As a healing stone Sunstone helps to fight depression by removing negative thoughts and dark moods. This stone can be used in purifying all the Chakra centers. This stone can be used to treat sore throats, stomach ulcers, digestive problems, spinal problems, sexual dysfunction, rheumatism and body aches. This stone helps to heighten intuition and is therefore a good stone for meditation purpose.

Like all gemstones, Sunstone also should be treated with special care. Protect the stone from blows, scratches, chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners. To clear the dirt, dip the gem in lukewarm soapy water for 5-10 minutes and then wash it well with plain water.
