According to Vedic Astrology the planet Saturn is called Shanaiswara. The name Shanaiswara means "slow mover". Shani, the son of the Suryadev born to his shadow wife Chaya is the slowest of the Grahas. Saturn takes 2 1/2 years in each Rasi, completing one cycle every 30 years. Shanidev plays the role of a judge in human lives. This Diety in Hinduism who keeps an eye on our deeds and depending on our Karmas we will be rewarded or punished by Shani. Shani is the most feared of all dieties because of his power to turn the king into a pauper within a moment. King Vikramaditya is one such person who had to suffer the wrath of Shanidev.Shani is most powerful in the 7th house. Saturn rules over the two sidereal signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. Shani exalts in Libra and falls in the sign of Aries. Saturn is particularly a beneficial planet for Taurus and Libra Ascendants. A malefic Shani could mean diseases like arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, gout etc. Saturn is generally known to affect one adversely on occasions when he occupies certain positions in one's horoscope like the Saade Sati (7 1/2 years) ,Ashtama Shanaiswara (Saturn in 8th house - 2 1/2 years) etc. Shani Puja and Grah Shanti Shani Pooja are some remedies done to appease planet Saturn and reduce the hardships one will have to face during such bad times. Apart from that there are a number of remedial measures one can follow including chanting Shani Mantras. The Shani Mantra has to be chanted facing the west and a minimum of 7 times a day. One can chant the mantra 108 times using a rudraksha rosary and by keeping a shani yantra for better results. - Observe fasts on 51 Saturdays and take Khicdi made of rice and black urad daal after the sunset.
- Wearing Blue Sapphire Gemstone
- Wearing 14 Mukhi Rudraksha or 7 Mukhi Rudraksha or a Saturn Mala comprising of 36 seven mukhi beads and one 14 mukhi rudraksha bead.
- Worship Lord Hanuman by chanting his mantras on Saturday and light ghee lamp in front of the idol.

Pretty Decent Article. You should have refrained from Advising 'Blue Sapphire' and mentioned that Astrology Gemstones have to be 'unheated and untreated' If someone has an afflicted Saturn and is running its 8th Transit from The Ascendant or Moon, wearing a Blue Sapphire could be disastrous.

I am pretty much brought up in US and life has been very challenging, so recently I have been more spirtual and trying to understand what is causing so many problems in my life. I consulted an astrologer and found out I had Shani Graha, so I have been observing the fast on saturday, as well as trying to do the mantra but it is very hard for me to pronounce and have been struggling to do the mantra. Also, recently I read that if you mispronounce the mantra it isn't good either. My mom was saying she can do the mantra in my place is that correct? Are parents allowed to do the mantra in a child's place? Also, is mispronouncing the mantra very bad and going to have the opposite effect, please advise.

Just like you have preferences, Gods too have Theirs. Don't forget that They have created/programmed/etc. etc. us. We are a part of Him. Not much different you know...Each and every Grahas (planets) have Their own preferences/choices/significances/targets/importance, etc. Nothing complicated if you truely try to Feel Him/Her...doesn't matter if you deny Him/Her...once again its your choice...you see.

Any saturday...see, the point is, in most of the holy books God himself/herself have mentioned that true love/dedication/bhakti is beyond everything. In today's fast-paced world you can't spend much regular time chanting mantras/slokas, etc, etc. You really have to do one thing, purify your heart and mind by yourself. What is the use of praying regularly and then do sinful acts. (+1) + (-1) = 0...right?
