Indian Religions
India is one of the most religiously diverse nations in this world and has the reputation of the 'land of Spirituality'. Majority of the Indian population (over 80%) are Hindus thus giving India the name ‘Hindustan'. However, all the major religions in the world are seen in India too. India is the birth place of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. Given below is a short write up of the different Religions of India.
Hinduism
This is one of the oldest religions in the World. Hindus believe in the concept of Trinity ( Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva), rebirth and karma. Hinduism is based on the four Vedas( Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda) which is said to have sprung up from the head of Lord Brahma. Rig Veda is the oldest of the Vedas and it is believed to be written much earlier than 2000 BC. It contains 1028 hymns for pleasing the different Gods. Samveda deals with music and Yajur Veda deals with rituals, sacrifices etc. Atharva Veda deals with medicine. There are also two great epics of Hindus, namely Ramayana and Mahabharata. Ramayana written by the sage Valmiki and is as old as 1500 BC and Mahabharata is written by Veda Vysya much before 400 AD.Hindus believe that living beings are not separate from God and that he is anywhere and everywhere.
Buddhism
Buddhism is the fifth largest religion in India with approximately 6.5 million followers. It a world religion based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha, a prince, who meditated under a peepal tree for 6 long years and attained enlightenment at the age of 35. He is considered as a descendant of Sage Angirasa and an avatar of Lord Vishnu. This religion came into existence around 580 BC. Buddhists believe that the aim of live is the extinction of suffering in life and welfare of all living beings. By recognizing the four noble truths of life and following the noble eightfold path, one can end the suffering in life and that one can escape from the vicious cycle of birth and death by following the main ethics of Buddhism comprising of Right Speech, Right Actions ,Right Livelihood, Right Exercise ,Right Awareness , Right Concentration ,Right Thoughts and Right Understanding. As per Buddhism, there is nothing such as a soul or athma. They believe that a human being is made of five elements which combine together at the time of birth. However, like Hindus, Buddhists also believe in rebirth and karma . It is to be noted that Dr B R Ambedkar, the harijan leader, was greatly influenced by this religion and adopted Buddhism. Some of the Buddhist famous tourist locations are Lumbini, Sarnath, Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, Sanchi, Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Kapilavastu, karla Caves, Bhaja Caves Varanasi, Mathura, Vaishali etc.

At the age of thirty, Mahavira renounced his wealthy life and followed the path of his Guru Parshvanatha to discover the meaning of existence. After 12 years of penance he attained enlightenment and spent the rest of his life meditating and teaching. Jains celebrate the main events in the life of Mahavira as festivals. Jainism preaches the doctrine of ahimsa and non violence. Jainism is greatly influenced by Hinduism. Jainism also believes rebirth, karma and moksha. They also follow vegetarianism. Some famous tourist destinations of Jains are Shatrunjaya Hills in Gujarat , Mount Abu in Rajasthan and Sravana Belgola in Karnataka.

The word 'Islam' is an Arabic word which means 'submission to the will of God'.The religion of Islam was popularised in 6th century AD by Prophet Muhammad, who is considered the messenger of God . good attempt.i fail to understand that if Quran was a reveleation of God then why He did not know about the most practised religions of that time Hinduism and Buddhism. only judaism and chritianity is mentioned in Quran and no religions of the East are mentioned. I think there were limitations of knowledge at that time.
IF CRICET IS MY IS MY RELIGION . SACHIN IS MY GOD
MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL
I AM HINDHU BUT I FEEL THAT ALL RELIGION ARE EQUAL . WE ARE ONE AND THIS IS A TRAIT OF INDIANS AND INDIA - THE LAND OF ALL RELIGION
hi, anamika's, nice hub and following comments are more interesting.
sukkran
Very good hub.
No matter to which religion we belong,we are one. And this is the trait of Indians and India-- the land of all religions.
A ggod attempt to focus on Indian religions.
There are some all parvading misconcepts about Jainism. Please note the right ones:
1. It is not contemporary but much older than Buddhism. It is not started from Mahaveera but from Rshabha Deva, the Adinath. Mahaveera is the 24th Teerthankara.
2. It is not an offshoot of Hinduism or a rebel to it. It is an independent religion.
3.Ahimsa and non-violence is similar. Though Ahimsa has a much deeper meaning.
Glad to know about you. You are not biased like other people. You said that you are not religious and you don’t believe in any religion except that of humanity. Humanity is the first and foremost thing that we should believe in. but I wonder how humanity could be an alternative to religion.
Humanity cannot answer the basic questions regarding our life such as from where did we arrive? What would be our destiny after death? What is the purpose of this life? How we should lead our lives?
Religions do answer these questions. We must see which religion gives satisfactory answers to these questions. Religion is communication with God and with people. It has nothing to do with communalism.
Well said Annamika!wonderful hub and yes,our unity in diversity is being disturbed by extremists and politicians to get votes.Very sad indeed! I remember the times when everyone celebrated all the religious festivals. Those were the wonderful years and we used to look forward for the festivals, whichever religion!
Prophet Muhammad didn’t know how to read or write as it was a common feature in Arabia that time. However some people knew how to read and write. Allah revealed Holy Quran (in stages over a period of 23 years) to Prophet Muhammad through Angel Gabriel. Whenever some verses of Quran were revealed Prophet memorized it and taught his companions. He also dictated the revealed verses to those who could write. In this way Quran was compiled.
The second thing is according to Quran every prophet (including Moses and Jesus and Abraham) invited people of his time towards worship of one God i.e. Islam (which means total submission to one God)
Quran says:
“Or do ye say that Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say: Do ye know better than Allah? Ah! Who is more unjust than those who conceal the testimony they have from Allah? But Allah is not unmindful of what ye do!” (Chapter 2, verse 140)
According to Quran Christianity and Judaism are distorted forms of Islam. Since these religions were corrupted, Allah sent His last messenger Muhammad to call people towards Him.
Now no revealed book is in its original form except the Holy Quran.
Its good that you are not biased for your religion only. We see people who dont want to know other religion. This is the basic problem that leads to communal tension and all. You have also given a brief introduction of Islam. As a Muslim it’s my duty to clear some misconceptions about Islam that you have. The statement that "The religion of Islam was popularised in 6th century AD by Prophet Muhammad" is not correct according to Islam. Islam says that all prophets including Abraham, Jesus and Moses, propagated the religion of Islam which means total submission to one God. Later people made distortions in their scripture and started wrong practices. So God sent the final prophet Muhammad. He didn’t bring any new religion. It is the same religion towards which all prophets invited people. The second thing is that you said”The Holy Quran, the sacred book of Muslims, is written by him”According to our belief (and this belief is based on sound reason) Quran is revealed by God not written by the prophet. It is a historical fact that Prophet Muhammad did not know how to read and write. I hope you will make necessary changes in your article.
And the latest one from Indians.....
