Cow's Milk - Is it good for you?

Cow's milk is considered as a vegetarian food as it is not procured by killing animals and does not consist of any animal part. Many of us think of Cows milk as a highly nutritious food which full-fills almost all nutritional requirements of human body.

Talking of the nutritional value of milk one also tend to forget when milk is then pasteurized valuable enzymes are destroyed without which milk is very difficult to digest. The human pancreas is not always able to produce these enzymes; over-stress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases.Fresh milk also is known to have cholesterol. Research done on Cow's milk also indicates that it is number one allergic food in this country. It also has been well documented as a cause in diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne. It is the primary cause of recurrent ear infections in children. It has also been linked to insulin dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and leukemia. Moreover The body fat of cows which is already contaminated with a wide range of carcinogens, pesticides, dioxin, and antibiotic residues are transported into the cows' milk which makes things even worse.

Are you a proud Vegetarian?

Are you a Vegetarian who believes that animals have rights too and therefore we should not use any animal products or byproducts? Are you aware that

  • Most alcoholic beverages use animal ingredients
  • Biscuits and pie crusts are also likely to be made using animal fat

I'd consider cow's milk as vegetarian as the animal hasn't had to die to provide it. Having said that my youngest is 15 months and I've kept her off it as I believe the longer before they're introduced to cow's milk the less chance of skin problems and asthma. I also don't think it's fortified enough for rapidly growing bones.

Just my two cents :)

Great Hub and thanks for sharing,

Great hub. I also believe that most people overestimate the nutritional value of cowsmilk. It´s true that we are mammals but has anyone ever seen other mammal having milk after being an adult!? Humans do it and worst of all with other specie´s milk :O
