Citrine is a variety of Quartz that ranges in color from a pale yellow to orange brown belonging to the semiprecious stones category. This beautiful translucent gemstone has derived its name from the word "citron" which is the French name for lemon. Citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale with a trigonal crystal system. It is an extremely popular but inexpensive substitute to yellow sapphire gemstone. This stone is used to make fancy and multicolored gemstone jewelry in combination with other stones. This gem stone bears a close resemblance with yellow topaz which is a rare stone.

No, they don't look the same. Even if 2 Gems may look the same, the refractive indices mostly would be different. One can check it using an instrument called the refractometer. One can judge a stone by its colour, its cleavage, its hardness and its specific gravity. However, It is not in the capacity of all. So it is better to check with experts dealing in gemstones to find if a stone is genuine or not.
