Air Hostess Career Prospects and Job Profile

My best friend’s daughter who is just 5 years old wants to be an air hostess when she becomes ‘big’ because she liked the auntie with the nice smile on the flight when she went on for holidays with her parents. Not only her who does not have a clue what an air hostess job means but also it is the dream job of many youngsters. There is no doubt about the fact that the Aviation industry is one of the fast growing industries with more and more Career opportunities every year. There is a host of domestic and foreign airliners which provide employment opportunities as Cabin Crew which includes flight stewards and air hostesses.

Job Profile and Qualifications

The main duty of an Air-hostess is to welcome and help the travelers in making the journey as smooth as possible. She in-flight information, demonstrates emergency devices and serving the passengers with food and drinks. She is also supposed to give special attention to those traveling by privilege class and those who are sick. An Air Hostess is required to work sometimes even at odd times depending on the flight schedule. She is also required to handle critical situations calmly and irritant or angry passengers patiently without losing patience.

Though it is not compulsory that you have to go through training before you go for the job, it is recommended you do it as they help aspiring air-hostesses to better their skills and aptitude. Some institutes even offer 100% Job assistance or assurance. Air Hostess Academy (AHA) and Frank Finn are two leading institutes. The fees may range around one Lakh for the training. Some of the basic qualifications and requirements of Airlines are given below.

  • 10 + 2/ Graduation
  • Aged above 18 years and below 25 years unmarried females
  • Height of 5 feet 2 inches minimum with proportionate weight
  • Good eyesight
  • Medically Fit
  • Good English fluency
  • Passport
  • Knowledge of Foreign Language (Preferred)
  • Diploma in Tourism/ Hotel Management (Preferred)
  • 1 Year experience in Hospitality Industry (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of First Aid (Preferred)
  • People friendly with good communication skills and positive attitude
  • Ability to handle stress and work pressures
  • Presentable and Pleasing Personality without visible tattoos
  • Confident wearing knee length skirts
  • No criminal background
  • Not scared of heights and knowing to swim

im 15 years old an going college in september, i am taking the travel and tourism course. But what i don't understand is that when you get to 18 and you've took both courses, can you get a job straight away and do you only get to work as an airhostess till your 25?

Useful info here for one who wants and searching the needs of an air hostess. A very responsible job but on the other hand as an air hostess, you'll see all the exotic destinations, stay in 5-star hotels and shop at some of the best shops around the world an and attractive payment.

I would love to persue my dream of being an air hostess..

I am amost 18 and as soon as my birthday comes i am planning on trying to make it an an air hostess this article was brilliant! I have been in the hairdressing business since they age of 13 so i am really used to working with people face to face and dealing with complaints and the not so nice jobs i am just over 5"2 and with a career like hairdrssing im used to getting dulled up for work and looking the part... do you think i would be a likely candidate they would choose..? i am fluent in english and know a lot of italian x

Nice article...really do wish to join the training and subsequently get a job....I'm a little above 5 ft 11 inches and I'm less than 25...so how do I go about that?

Sunita : The height requirement is Minimum 5 ft 2 inches and Maximum 6 ft 5 inches.

Packerpack : Men can try a career as Flight Steward.The flight steward requirements are similar to that of airhostess.

Abhishek : You are right to some extent. But once they are old thay can move to ground duty.

There are great things but then there are some others things that keep a lot of girls from opting for it. Like the fact that you have to bear with the indecent behaviour of a lot of guys who have the mindset that since they have paid for the ticket, they can do as they please. 

Also, don't you think that their careerspan is quite less since as and when they get a bit old, they are replaced and after having worked as an AH for say 1- years, where would you go?

Air Hostess. Ya that is a good career option. You get paid and at the same time you get to see the world around. That is fun! But hey, what about boys! Would you not like to write one for us too? Hey chill, just kidding, write what you feel like. But yes you have put forward a good career options and I guess even in this recession it will hold good.
